Being experienced travelers, we understand being limited time and having to sift through all the information that is out there. So, we created this guide to help save time and increase your chance of seeing the ponies. This list we created is of the top beautiful and serene places to view the free and wild ponies.

Chincoteague Island is beautiful and the top travel destination to see ponies in the wild. Our wild ponies have lived for hundreds of years on Assateague Island in Virginia and Maryland. On the Island it is shared that the ponies may have swum from a Spanish shipwreck. Seeing the ponies surrounded in such beauty running wild and free is breathtaking and a memorable experience! Sunset is one of my favorite times to see the beautiful ponies, especially when the sky turns to calming hues of purple, pink and shadows the ponies’ silhouettes.

So, where are the ponies? Here are two of the top places to visit from Chincoteague for viewing wild ponies.

These ponies are located on the wildlife refuge when you are traveling down the road Maddox Blvd. (Beach Road) to go to the beach. They are located in the wildlife refuge on the marshland and will be on the right-side behind a fenced in area before getting to the beach. Often you can see the ponies off in the distance on the marsh with their herds between the trees. Sometimes you will see the ponies closer to the fenced off area. One way you will know if the ponies are out is on the side of the road, you will see people out with cameras to get a stunning photograph and cars pulled over. These ponies that are surrounded in beautiful and serene nature made up of water, marshland and trees are known as the southern herd. The best way to see these ponies are by driving in the car or bicycling.

The northern herd ponies are located down the service road off of the wildlife loop in the refuge. The best way to see these ponies is by hiking or bicycling. Seeing the ponies this way is 7.5 miles on way. There are also not benches to sit or rest. In the wildlife loop you are able to park your car and bicycle to the service gravel road, however you must hike the rest of the way to view the ponies.

Another place you must travel to see stunning scenery and the wild ponies is the Maryland side of Assateague. Assateague Island National Seashore is another barrier island with breathtaking views and a beautiful beach. Traveling to Assateague is a must do and one that we love for a rainy day. Its perfect for a chance to see beautiful wild ponies in their natural habitat up closer.
